    Fat residue and use-wear found on Acheulian biface and scraper associated with butchered elephant remains at the site of Revadim, Israel

    The archaeological record indicates that elephants must have played a significant role in early human diet and culture during Palaeolithic times in the Old World. However, the nature of interactions between early humans and elephants is still under discussion. Elephant remains are found in Palaeolithic sites, both open-air and cave sites, in Europe, Asia, the Levant, and Africa. In some cases elephant and mammoth remains indicate evidence for butchering and marrow extraction performed by humans. Revadim Quarry (Israel) is a Late Acheulian site where elephant remains were found in association with characteristic Lower Palaeolithic flint tools. In this paper we present results regarding the use of Palaeolithic tools in processing animal carcasses and rare identification of fat residue preserved on Lower Palaeolithic tools. Our results shed new light on the use of Palaeolithic stone tools and provide, for the first time, direct evidence (residue) of animal exploitation through the use of an Acheulian biface and a scraper. The association of an elephant rib bearing cut marks with these tools may reinforce the view suggesting the use of Palaeolithic stone tools in the consumption of large game

    A thermodynamic relation is derived and simplified for use as a temperature-limiting control equation involving measurement of gas temperature before combustion and gas pressures before and after combustion. For critical flow in the turbine nozzles of gas-turbine engines, the control equation is further simplified to require only measurements upstream of the burner. Hypothetical control systems are discussed to illustrate application of the control equations

    Vibrational Spectrum of HMX at CO2 Laser Wavelengths: A Combined DRIFT and LPAS Study

    The vibrational spectrum of solid standard HMX (octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine) was investigated. Two spectroscopic techniques were adopted for their different sensitivity and resolution. A preliminary survey of the absorption bands of the compound was performed in the 8000–400 cm−1 spectral range by employing the diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) technique at room temperature. The high-resolution line spectrum of HMX was obtained in the 9.2–10.8 μm spectral range by laser photoacoustic spectroscopy (LPAS) method, using a line tuneable 10 W stabilised cw CO2 laser light source. By comparing the data collected with the two techniques in the common frequency range, a very good agreement was observed

    Comparison between active stress field and tectonic structures in Northern Italy, Lombardy Region

    The aim of this work is to understand the complex pattern of active stress field orientations revealed by borehole breakout analysis with respect to the tectonic structures in a wide region of Northern Italy. The area is located in the central-western part of the Po Plain between the south verging Southern Alps structures and the north verging buried folds and thrusts of the Monferrato and Emilia arcs. Little information concerning the active stress field is available because of the low seismicity level and the thick layer of sediments that covers the entire zone. A detailed borehole breakout analysis has been performed in 36 wells with depths ranging from 2.2 to 7.3 km, whose data have been supplied by Eni. Breakout analysis determined the minimum and maximum horizontal stress directions (Shmin and SHmax). The results show a very complex pattern, pointing out that the stress field is not uniform. In this area the regional stress field seems not «strong» enough, compared to the local one, so most of the wells detect only the local field. This work contributes to clarify the various Shmin orientations observed in this area, pointing out at wide scale, a general compression in NNE-SSW direction in this complex region

    Experimental and Computational Study of the New Gaseous Molecules OMnF and OMnF[Sub 2]

    The new gaseous species OMnF and OMnF2 were identified and studied by high-temperature Knudsen Cell Mass Spectrometry. Their thermochemical atomization energies were derived through the study of several all-gas equilibria in the temperature range 1735–1913 K. FTIR matrix isolation experiments together with ab initio and density functional calculations were performed to determine the molecular parameters, bond distances, and vibrational frequencies of OMnF(g) and OMnF2(g) . The results allowed us to evaluate a set of thermal functions for the new species that were used in the evaluation of the equilibrium data. The proposed atomization energies and enthalpies of formation are DaH0 + (OMnF,g)5(90365) kJ mol21, DfH298.15 + (OMnF,g)5(229765) kJ mol21, and DaH0 + (OMnF2 ,g)5(1470670) kJ mol21, DfH298.15 + (OMnF2 ,g)5(2789670) kJ mol21

A pressure-sensing system 'consisting of a tube terminating in a reservoir is investigated for the transient relation between a presSure disturbance at the open end of the tube and the pressure response in the reservoir. Design parameters are presented that can be adjusted to achieve a desired performance fran such a system when the system is considered as a transfer member of a control loop
